Monday 17th March 2014 - ***** skiing and very sunny and warm

We skied at Margeriaz and had a brilliant day. The weather is glorious again and the snow and pistes perfect really:) Glad we waited until Monday to ski because one it is 3 euros each cheaper between Monday and Friday (42 euros - £35 for us both) and two there is hardly anybody here! There was a brilliant blue from top to bottom from the chair lift and a great black from the very top of the resort reached by a really long drag lift. Stephen videoed both those runs. We also had a go at the border cross! We had our lunch at the top on the edge of the cliff watching the wonderful Alpine choughs again. We left the van about 10.30 and didn’t get back until 5 so a long day and we were pretty whacked! One of the best days skiing we have had!

Tuesday 18th March – Relax, shop travelling

We took our time packing up and leaving Marjeriaz, filling the water tanks before we left. On our way down the valley we called in at Marjeriaz’s sister station Aillon Le Jeaune. Although there was accommodation and a small shop there was no snow! The whole place was shut. Carried on down to Chambery, stopping to try and identify which cliffs we were on yesterday from the bottom – very hard to work out from down here! Got a bit lost trying to find the huge Carrefour where we used to stop with the boys on our way to Christmas and Easter holidays. Eventually found it and got a few bits and pieces including two blue chairs (we will try again-last time we tried French fold up chairs they lasted a couple of sittings!). We were hoping to get a new step ladder for me to get to the top box (to replace the ones I keep driving over!) but they were a bit flimsy. Visited a couple of huge sports shops with end of season and liquidation sales on to see if we could get a couple of pairs of racquettes cheap but they are either still very expensive or a bit plastic and we don’t really know what a good and bad pair look like so have decided to wait until we get home and see whats on e-bay. Completely fed up with shops so set the satnav to get us out of chambery on the right road but it was still a pain as the bloomin thing cut out at the vital moment! Managed it eventually and drove down the most beautiful scenic road. We have been down here before but in the autumn. We stopped for lunch at the Granier station just past the Col du Granier. The snow has long gone from this tiny two drag lift station but it made a good stop for lunch at 4.30!! Arrived at St. Pierre de Chartreuse about half an hour later and there is still snow here and it is open so we parked up at a car park access to one of the lifts half way between the two stations. A dog came over hopefully dropping a rock on the car park outside the van hoping we would throw it for him and when we didn’t instantly get out he picked it up and put it on the step! He was very sweet with a sad looking face. I threw it about 20 times for him and he always brought the same rock back!
